What is anxiety?

The symptoms of anxiety

A GAD can cause both mental and physical symptoms. These vary depending on the individual but can include feeling irritable, worried, and suffering with insomnia or having trouble concentrating.

 Conventional treatment for anxiety

For anxiety sufferers sometimes even everyday tasks can seem impossible. A variety of different treatments are available to ease psychological and physical symptoms, which can include psychological help and medication.

Psychological help generally begins with talking therapies: either counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT helps the patient to identify unhelpful and unrealistic beliefs and behavioural patterns. The patient then works with the therapist work to change their behaviour and replace their unhelpful beliefs with more realistic and balanced ones. Studies suggest psychological treatment has longer lasting effects than medication.

There are a number of medicines used to treat anxiety. This can include long-term medication such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs which increase serotonin in your brain), such as sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram or paroxetine and venlafaxine. Short-term medication can include antihistamines, benzodiazepines and buspirone.

Common side effects of SSRIs can include:

Anxiety may well be caused by chemical imbalance in the brain when the brain’s neurotransmitter activity is disturbed. Higher levels of serotonin, counter some depressive symptoms. Therefore, using medical marijuana for anxiety disorders as an alternative treatment may help some of the common symptoms. It is well known that stress related anxiety can affect your emotions and put you at higher risk of depression. This in turn can lead to problems with memory and learning as well. Research published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology in Israel claims that medical marijuana can protect against memory and learning loss which results from chronic stress. The researchers have claimed that their findings “suggest that cannabinoid receptor activation could represent a novel approach to the treatment of cognitive deficits that accompany a variety of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders.”

It is interesting that while the use of marijuana is known to cause temporary memory problems in healthy people, the opposite is true in rats with chronic stress. Daily doses of a THC-like chemical seemed to improve short-term memory compared to those that were left untreated. Rats that received medical marijuana treatment also exhibited greater learning abilities.

According to on-going research, THC, which is an active ingredient found in medical marijuana, comes into contact and reacts with a chemical called anandamide. Anandamide reduces the response to threat in the brain. Medical marijuana patients using medical marijuana for anxiety therefore describe an instant relaxing and soothing sensation in the body.
