Return to medical conditions page

Medical marijuana has been shown to ease the symptoms of nausea. Here at Sensible Seeds we have undertaken extensive research into the cannabis strains and treatments that will most benefit sufferers of nausea. Sensible Seeds is committed to bringing beneficial cannabis strains and related medical marijuana information to you and other medical marijuana patients. We are updating our website as new discoveries come to light. Sensible Seeds have sourced information from a variety of well-established medical marijuana websites and a summary of this information is laid out for medical marijuana patients below.

What is nausea?

Nausea is a sensation of unease and discomfort in the upper stomach and head that sometimes leads to an urge to vomit. Nausea can be as an adverse effect of many drugs, particularly opiates, and may also be a side-effect of too many sugary foods. By itself nausea is not a sickness, but it can be a symptom of several conditions.

In patients with severe or chronic illnesses such as AIDS and cancer, vomiting can last over a period of days. Some patients can tear their oesophagus.  Due to the vomiting and lack of appetite, severe dehydration and weigh loss is normal.  While chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy may be an integral part of their survival, many cancer patients decide not to undergo such therapies because the side effects are too severe.

Antiemetics (anti-nausea drugs) are needed because not only are the symptoms of nausea and vomiting painful and disruptive for the patient, but they can also cause dehydration and poor nutrition, leading to severe weight loss and other conditions that prevent recovery. Through the actions of its unique compounds, known as cannabinoids, medical marijuana is widely recognized as an effective antiemetic among medical marijuana patients.

Medical marijuana and nausea

Marijuana is effective at reducing nausea. Studies have shown that medical marijuana is an effective Antiemetic (anti-nausea) medication and it can relieve the symptoms of nausea even among those MMJ patients who have nausea as a result of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Smoking medical marijuana helps to relieve symptoms quickly and MMJ patients are then able to eat and keep food down. This combats weight loss and muscle wasting. A reduction in nausea and vomiting reduces stress which then allows for improved sleep patterns.  Medical marijuana can help people with anorexia increase their appetite and improve their mood, and chronic nausea, a sensation where one constantly feels the need to vomit, can be alleviated by MMJ.

Medical marijuana for nausea is an effective way to treat nausea because only a small amount of cannabis is required.  A few puffs of smoke or a small amount of vaporized gas from marijuana will do.  It is 100% natural and does not have other side effects.

A 1999 report by the Institutes of Medicine concluded that, "In patients already experiencing severe nausea or vomiting, pills are generally ineffective, because of the difficulty in swallowing or keeping a pill down and slow onset of the drug effect.  Thus an inhalation (preferably not smoking) cannabinoid drug delivery system would be advantageous for treating chemotherapy-induced nausea."

A 1975 report published in the New England Journal of Medicine noted that the effects of oral (ingested rather than smoked) tetrahydrocannabinol on nausea and vomiting were advantageous.  According to the study, "Oral tetrahydrocannabinol has antiemetic properties and is significantly better than a placebo in reducing vomiting caused by chemotherapeutic agents."

Medical marijuana can ease nausea and vomiting and reduces the likelihood that medical marijuana patients will ‘waste away’.  There is also less likelihood of depression and other ‘side effects’ brought on by the disease, and every likelihood of an increase in appetite.  All of these things together can assist cancer patients to live a better, happier, more comfortable life.

How Medical Marijuana works for Nausea and Vomiting

In most cases of nausea and vomiting, the digestive tract produces large amounts of gastric acids, either to promote nausea or as an irritant. The body has a natural endocannabinoid system that includes cannabinoid receptors in the digestive tract. Once these receptors are activated, the digestive tract reduces its production of these acids and symptoms ease. These receptors are only activated when cannabinoids find and attach to the receptors, so ingesting or inhaling medical marijuana can reduce or stop nausea and vomiting.

Inhaled medical marijuana achieves the best results for reducing nausea and vomiting especially when contrasted with synthetic alternatives. Vaporized or inhaled medical marijuana are safe alternative to smoking cannabis in the traditional way. The body can absorb medical marijuana quickly because it is similar to the cannabinoids that the body already naturally produces.
